Overview

Some Lake District cottages ask you to drive everywhere. This one doesn't. 3 The Townhouses sits right in the middle of Keswick, a few minutes on foot from the Market Square, with Fitz Park and the river on the doorstep, and Skiddaw filling the skyline behind. The bakery, the outdoor shops, the Saturday market, the pubs and the fell paths are all reachable from the front door. Inside, it's a proper house rather than a holiday let: four bedrooms , one bathroom and a shower room spread over three floors, sleeping eight in comfort. It's a turn-of-the-century slate townhouse that has held on to its original tiled floors, fireplaces and ceiling coving, and gained the things you actually want on holiday — proper heating, a log burner for cosy evenings, a well-appointed kitchen, and Wi-Fi throughout. There is a small outdoor space for a drink at the end of the day.

Description

The House
The front door opens onto original tiled flooring and a hallway that runs through to the back of the house.
The kitchen is the room people end up in. It's cosy and well-appointed with an espresso machine and enough cookware to cook a real meal for eight rather. A washing machine takes care of the walking gear.
Also on this floor: a king-size bedroom with a bay window, room for a travel cot, and a shower room — genuinely useful if anyone in the party would rather not climb stairs. The rear hallway leads out to the patio which has seating for everyone.
The living room is located on the first floor, with a log-burning stove, comfortable seating for everyone, and a Smart TV set up for quiet Sundays or a rainy afternoon.
Alongside it, a double bedroom and the family bathroom, with a bath and an overhead shower.
Two more bedrooms are located at the top of the house: a double with fell views — worth taking for the morning light alone — and a twin, which can be made up as a super-king if you'd rather. (£15 charge) Just ask when you book.
Every bed in the house sits on a high-quality, ethically sourced mattress and is made up with good linen. Towels are provided, along with Cole and Lewis toiletries.
A small private patio sits at the back of the house, with seating for eight. The lockable store alongside it takes bikes, boots, paddleboards and anything else that came back wetter than it left.

The Location
Keswick is a walking town, and this is the part of it you want to be staying in.
The Market Square is around five minutes away. The Moot Hall has stood at the centre of it since 1813, the outdoor market has been running for more than seven hundred years on a Saturday, and there's a local produce market on a Thursday. Around it: the outdoor shops Keswick is known for, independent cafés, wine bars, restaurants and the century-old Alhambra cinema.
Fitz Park is more or less next door: a riverside stretch of green with a playground, tennis courts, a putting green, a bowling green and an arboretum, plus the Keswick Museum tucked in among it. It's a good place to let children run before breakfast and a very good place to sit with the paper afterwards. Derwentwater is a fifteen-minute stroll down Lake Road and through Hope Park — longer if you stop at the gardens, which you probably will. At the bottom you'll find the Theatre by the Lake, the jetties for the Keswick Launch, and Friar's Crag another five minutes on, with one of the most photographed views in England (and worthy of that title) waiting at the end of it.
For the everyday things, both supermarkets are within walking distance, the X4 and X5 bus stops are a few minutes away for Penrith and the west coast. The closest car park is directly across the road, and a complimentary parking pass is included in your stay.

The great outdoors
You can go on a proper fell walk, straight from the house. Latrigg is the obvious first evening's walk — a gentle climb with views of the whole of Derwentwater laid out at the top. Skiddaw, one of England's four mountains over 3,000 feet, goes on from there. Walla Crag gives you the classic lake-and-valley view for more modest effort, and Catbells — visible from the top-floor bedroom window — is a short drive or a boat ride across the water. Further out but still an easy morning: Castlerigg Stone Circle, four thousand years old and ringed by mountains on every side, Borrowdale and the Honister Pass, and the forest trails at Whinlatter. Bikes, boots and wet waterproofs all have somewhere to live in the lockable store at the back of the house. Great stay in the heart of Keswick!
My friends and I loved our stay 6-night stay in “3 The Townhouses”. The location in relation to the town of Keswick was brilliant. The town centre is just a 2-3 min walk away. The house itself was beautifully clean on arrival and a perfect size for the 5 of us. We would definitely return!

An excellent week in Keswick
We really enjoyed our stay in the townhouse. The property was clean, comfortable and spacious. Great location a stones throw from Fitz Park and an easy walk into town. Kitchen was well equipped and bedrooms and living rooms were lovely. We had 6 people and there was plenty of room, only concern would be that is might have felt a bit cramped at full capacity (8 people).
