Explore the Autumn colours at Whinlatter Forest 🍁
If your family loves the great outdoors, a trip to Whinlatter Forest is a must. Just a short drive from Keswick, this beautiful mountain forest is full of woodland trails, spectacular views and opportunities for little adventurers to burn off some energy.
Follow the forest trails, discover the Gruffalo sculptures, enjoy the adventure play areas or hire bikes to explore further afield.
For something a little more adventurous, Go Ape Whinlatter offers treetop challenges, high ropes and exhilarating ziplines. During October half-term, Go Ape is also running its Sundown Adventures, with illuminated trees and glowing lights adding a magical twist to the treetop experience. Sessions are running on selected dates from 26 October to 8 November, so check availability and book ahead.
Top tip: Wrap up warm, wear sturdy footwear and bring waterproofs. Autumn in the Lakes can be unpredictable, but a little drizzle never stopped a proper adventure!
Discover the wonders of Keswick Museum 🦴
If you’re looking for an indoor adventure that will keep curious minds entertained, Keswick Museum is well worth a visit this October half-term. Just a five-minute walk from the town centre, it’s packed with fascinating stories about the people, geology and history of Keswick and the surrounding Lake District.
The museum’s interactive Outside In experience is a real highlight for families. Explore the landscape through virtual reality, aerial footage, digital adventures and hands-on activities that bring the fells and lakes to life – no walking boots required!
Little explorers can also take on the Mountain Rescue Trail, searching the galleries to find all eight hidden mountaineers. It’s a fun way to explore the museum together and add a little challenge to your visit.
Although the Halloween craft session has now sold out, there’s still plenty to discover. The museum is open daily from 10am to 4pm, making it a great option if the autumn weather takes a turn.
Find admission prices and visitor information on the Keswick Museum website.
Enjoy a family show at Theatre by the Lake 🎭
For a half-term treat that’s a little different, why not book a family trip to Theatre by the Lake? Set beside beautiful Derwentwater, it’s a lovely place to enjoy live entertainment, and there are two particularly exciting family-friendly shows on the programme next week.
-
Comedy Club 4 Kids – Wednesday 28 October, 2pm. A chance for children to enjoy stand-up comedy from professional comedians, with all the fun and silliness specially suited to younger audiences.
- Michael Rosen: NICE! – Thursday 29 October, 3pm. Beloved poet and author Michael Rosen celebrates his 80th birthday with a lively show featuring favourite poems, including Chocolate Cake and Hot Food, alongside brand-new material. The show is suitable for all ages, particularly children aged 6–10.
Both shows offer a brilliant opportunity to introduce children to the magic of live performance – and make a memorable half-term outing.
Be sure to check availability and book tickets through the Theatre by the Lake website.
Settle in for a family film at Keswick Alhambra Cinema 🍿
Sometimes, a cosy cinema trip is just what you need after a busy day exploring the Lakes – especially if the weather isn’t playing ball!
The historic Keswick Alhambra Cinema is right in the town centre and has some great options for a family film outing over half-term.
Little ones (and big ones too!) will love Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom, with Shaun and the flock getting caught up in a woolly adventure. Scheduled from 24–29 October.
Please be advised that screening times can change and availability may be limited. Check the Alhambra’s live programme before making plans.
Make time for a cafe stop – and try something different at The Sandbox Café! ☕🚜
Exploring Keswick is hungry work, and one of the best things about a family day out is finding somewhere to stop for a tasty lunch, a warming hot chocolate or a well-deserved slice of cake.
There are plenty of lovely independent cafés around town, so take your pick of a traditional tearoom, a cosy coffee shop or somewhere with a view. But if you’re looking for something a little different this half-term, we have a special recommendation!

Located at 74 Main Street, The Sandbox Café combines coffee, cake and a seriously fun indoor construction experience.
Children (and grown-ups!) can take control of realistic radio-controlled diggers, loaders and dump trucks in a purpose-built arena. It’s a brilliant way to keep the family entertained if the weather turns wet, and a particularly good choice for little ones who love anything with wheels, tracks or an engine.
Younger children can get involved with a helping hand from an adult, while older children and adults can try their skills with the more advanced machines. Sessions typically last 30 minutes, and booking ahead is recommended during school holidays.
While the budding builders get to work, you can enjoy locally roasted coffee and delicious cake — the perfect combination of playtime and a little downtime!
Find details and book your session at The Sandbox Café website.
Of course, you could also grab a treat from one of Keswick’s many other independent cafés before heading back out to explore. Sometimes the simplest half-term pleasures – a hot chocolate, a slice of cake and a chance to put your feet up – are the best of all.
All aboard at Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum 🚂
For a family day out with a difference, head to Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum, just a short drive from Keswick.
Discover the area’s industrial heritage, explore the fascinating quarry museum and enjoy a ride on the narrow-gauge quarry railway. It’s a great way to combine a little local history with an experience children will remember.
There’s an extra reason to visit this half-term: the week beginning 24 October is advertised as the railway’s last steaming week of the season, with steam trains running on the holiday timetable from 24 to 31 October.
If you have a budding train enthusiast in the family, this is one to add to your list!
Check the museum website before setting off for the latest timetable, admission details and any changes due to weather.
See the world differently at The Puzzling Place 🤔
If the Lake District weather has other ideas, head into Keswick town centre for a visit to The Puzzling Place.
This quirky indoor attraction is packed with optical illusions, holograms and interactive exhibits designed to trick your eyes and challenge your brain. Step into the Anti-gravity Room, experiment with perspective and prepare for plenty of puzzled faces and giggles.
It’s suitable for a range of ages and makes a brilliant rainy-day activity for families who fancy something a little different.
You can find opening information and visitor details on The Puzzling Place website.
Enjoy a lakeside adventure around Derwentwater 🌊
You can’t visit Keswick without spending a little time beside beautiful Derwentwater. Autumn brings wonderful colours to the surrounding woodland, making it a lovely time for a family walk, a lakeside picnic or simply enjoying the views.
Take a gentle stroll along the shore, look out for wildlife, collect fallen leaves or make up a nature treasure hunt for the children. If you’re feeling more adventurous, explore one of the many walking routes around the lake.
For a different perspective, check out Keswick Launch for boat trips around Derwentwater, with opportunities to hop off at different landing stages and explore more of the shoreline.
For younger children or families wanting a shorter outing, Hope Park is another great option close to the town centre, with gardens and family activities to enjoy. Crazy Golf is great fun for all the family, and younger children will love the ride-on tractors, and remote-control diggers and boats.
Remember that paths can be muddy and slippery at this time of year, so suitable footwear is a must.
Visit What’s On in Keswick for the latest event information, dates and booking links.
It’s always worth checking details directly with the organiser before travelling, as events can sell out or change.
