Eat Local: Steaks of the Lakes!

So, we’re still selflessly eating our way around Keswick.

Honestly, where would this town be without our dedication?

And stomachs…

This time, Sarah H and her partner Marc wandered over to Steaks of the Lakes on St John’s Street, Keswick’s premier, farm‑to‑fork steak restaurant, proudly family‑run and fiercely committed to local Cumbrian produce. Sounds right up our street!

Reviews from TripAdvisor rave about the atmosphere of this fine-dining restaurant, and for good reason. The atmosphere is cosy, inviting, with good music, friendly staff, and a genuine sense that you’re about to be very well fed. Multiple diners have praised both the décor and the welcome, describing the service as attentive, exceptionally friendly, and genuinely welcoming, and we can attest to that.

The ethos at Steaks of the Lakes is refreshingly simple: local ingredients, sourced responsibly, treated with respect. Their focus on provenance shines through their menu, which highlights high‑quality, local cuts — proper field‑to‑fork dining with absolutely no shortcuts. More than just your usual ‘we support local farmers’ gimmick, it’s clear to see that the team behind Steaks of the Lakes are genuinely passionate about creating a dining experience that showcases the very best of local meat and produce.

Sarah opted for the sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce, paired with sweet potato fries, which she praises as “utterly divine”. Review after review celebrates their steaks as perfectly cooked, full of flavour, and generously portioned.

Seriously, Sarah hasn’t stopped talking about it, and while Marc doesn’t work with us, we do hear faint whispers of “rump steak… peppercorn sauce… chips…” in the distance, which is incredibly impressive for someone who Sarah tells us lives off sausage and mash!

Aside from the food, a standout quality was the service, the kind where your glass is never empty, your questions are never a bother, and the staff balance professionalism with genuine warmth. Steaks of the Lakes has earned consistent praise for its team’s attention to detail and natural hospitality. Fine dining should mean equally fine customer service, and each experience feels personal, elevated, and like the staff are genuinely grateful for your custom.

Located right in the heart of Keswick, Steaks of the Lakes is open Tuesday through Saturday from 17:00 to 22:30, giving it that neatly-curated ‘special‑evening‑out’ feel without being overly formal. Whether you’re celebrating something big, craving a proper steak after a day in the fells, or just fancying a cosy date night like Sarah and Marc, the restaurant strikes a balance between elevated dining and laid‑back comfort. Despite the formal style, you never feel out of place, and this is equally down to the atmosphere and staff.

That comfort extends to the menu beyond the steak. While steak is, of course, the star, diners frequently praise the starters and sides — from Moules Mariniere to beetroot and feta salad, and, in true Sarah style, the prosecco.

What truly sets Steaks of the Lakes apart is how it embodies Keswick’s charm while elevating its food scene.

Keswick has long nailed the coffee, cake, and light bites market, but restaurants like Steaks of the Lakes add depth to its evenings, offering something special for both locals and visitors who appreciate thoughtful, high‑quality dining.

We’re proud to add Steaks of the Lakes to our growing list of Keswick must‑try spots.

Sarah and Marc left happy, full, and already discussing what they’d order next time.

Marc is leaning toward the fillet. Sarah is unwavering: same again, please.
