Designed to appeal to both the experienced or novice endurance athlete, the Lakesman Triathlon first ran (no pun intended…) in 2016 and begins in Keswick, with a showstopping transition area at the Theatre by the Lake.
The race is directed by Phil Whitehead, and in 2025 the team behind the Lakesman Triathlon went on to host the British and England Championships (respectively) for middle-distance races. The event welcomed top triathletes, and is a true testament to the success and popularity of the annual event.
The swim takes place in the crystal clear waters of Derwentwater, generally regarded one the Lake Districts most scenic lakes, home to the Keswick Launch Company, and just a stone’s throw from the Theatre by the Lake.
The bike route skims the Western Lake District, so athletes get to experience a side of the lakes often unvisited by tourists.
During the run, athletes will get to take in the stunning views of the Lake District, including views of Skiddaw, as well as a spectator-friendly section through Keswick Rugby Club, which hosts the finish area, registration, prize presentation and merchandise.

Speaking to the BBC in 2024, Mr. Whitehead chatted candidly about the event’s importance to the local area and economy.
“We estimate the event brings in about £2m each year and the competitors are not just staying in Keswick, they’re staying in places like Cockermouth, Carlisle and Workington too.
“We do this because we love Cumbria and we love triathlon and we’re just so delighted that more athletes will get to see just how beautiful this county is.”
