Jan’s Sandwich Shop first opened its doors to the public on 12th February 1993, celebrating 30 years in 2023, and since then has baked, prepared and sold around 1.5 million sandwiches and over half a million cakes!
A favourite with locals for a breakfast butty or a lunch time stop, there’s almost always a queue to secure one of Jan’s Lakeland Sandwiches (lucky for us, it’s just down the road from our office!) though it is possible to call the shop and order ahead. It’s great to know that there’s a good sandwich waiting for you at the end of a long hike, or another busy day in Keswick.
As well as cold sandwiches, Jan’s also serves hot food at incredible prices that you won’t find anywhere else in Keswick! Get a full English with tea or coffee every morning, including bacon, egg, sausage, tomato, beans, a toasted roll with butter for just £5.00.
Looking for a hot lunch? Try the Reuben/Rachel: home-cured salted beef or turkey saddle, with sauerkraut, Russian dressing, gherkins, and Swiss cheese. Or, the classic Hot Roast of the Day.
Not into sandwiches? Jan’s also serves a range of jacket potatoes, baked in olive oil and sea salt, available with all the same fillings as your favourite sandwiches. Try the Soup of the Day, with small or large sizes available from just £1.60, made with fresh ingredients; meat or vegetarian options available.

Booking: There is no indoor seating available at Jan’s. Food may be ordered ahead of time to take-away, but this is not necessary.
Dogs: Dogs are permitted inside of the building, though the customer area is small and we advise you are mindful of other customers- when travelling in a couple or group, we recommend one of you wait outside with any four-legged friends during busy periods.
Allergens: A range of gluten-free breads and vegan/vegetarian fillings are available. Locals often praise Jan’s as ‘the only place to get a good gluten-free sandwich’.
Seating: No seating. Jan’s is take-away only.
