Derwent Water

Derwent Water is one Keswick’s main assets. Only a short stroll from the town centre via Hope Park with its beautiful formal gardens, the lake is three miles long and very much a ‘landscape of moods’ varying from the dramatic waves splashing against Friar’s Crag – when driven by southerly gales – to absolutely mirror calm in the early mornings. Fed by the River Derwent catchment area in the high fells, Derwent Water has a long historical and literary background.

There are many ways to explore this beautiful lake, either on foot, bike or by boat! Boat cruises are available from the Keswick Launch at the lakeside, and normally takes around 50 minutes. This is a fantastic opportunity to get on the lake and get closer to the islands. Discounted tickets for the launch can be purchased from the Keswick Information Centre; alternatively they can be purchased from the ticket box next to the lake.

If you are in to your paddleboarding and kayaking, then Derwent Water is a spectacular spot to get on the water and explore the islands. Do be aware though that some of the islands are privately owned so do your research before you start your adventures. Always remember, if you are planning to paddle on multiple lakes during your visit, do wash them in-between to avoid cross contamination!

If you prefer your adventures to be land-based, then why not take a hike around the whole of Derwent Water. One of the most stunning walks you will encounter during your stay and all relatively flat, its not to be missed. During the summer months there are plenty of pop up coffee vendors to keep you fuelled along the way, plus lots of spots to stop for a picnic and to take in the scenery! Roughly 10 miles long it will take a good couple of hours so make sure your wearing good footwear and take plenty of water and snacks!
