Derwentwater is one Keswick’s main assets.
Only a short stroll from the town centre via Hope Park, the ‘lake’ is three miles long and very much a ‘landscape of moods’, varying from the dramatic waves splashing against Friar’s Crag, to mirror-calm in the early mornings. Fed by the River Derwent catchment area in the high fells, Derwent Water has a long historical and literary background.
There are many ways to explore this beautiful lake, either by foot, bike or boat! Boat cruises are available from the Keswick Launch at the lakeside, and normally takes around 50 minutes. This is a fantastic opportunity to get on the lake and get closer to the islands. Discounted tickets for the launch can be purchased from the Keswick Information Centre. Alternatively, they can be purchased from the shop on the waterfront, where snacks and drinks can also be purchased- including duck food!
If you’re into paddleboarding and kayaking, then Derwentwater is a great spot to get on the water and explore the islands. Be aware that some of the islands are privately owned, so do your research before you start your adventures. Always remember, if you are planning to paddle on multiple lakes during your visit, do wash them in-between to avoid cross contamination!
If you prefer your adventures to be land-based, then why not do the Derwentwater circular walk? One of the most stunning walks you will encounter during your stay, the Derwentwater circular is one of the best flat walks in Keswick and the Lake District. During the summer months there are plenty of pop-up coffee vendors to keep you fuelled along the way, plus lots of spots to stop for a picnic and to take in the scenery! Roughly 10 miles long, the walk can take a good couple of hours, so make sure you’re wearing good footwear and take plenty of water and snacks!
