Portinscale is a pretty, bustling village which looks out across the shimmering waters of Derwentwater and boasts not one but two marinas!

Perfect for water sports enthusiasts big and small, why not head down to Nichol End Marina and book out their monster paddleboard or hire a sailboat from Derwentwater Marina and explore the lake and its stunning scenery. If you are feeling brave and don’t mind getting wet we recommend booking an adventure with Keswick Extreme. Whether it’s Ghyll Scrambling or lazy tubing you will be in the safe hands of their experienced instructors and guaranteed a fun day out.

From Portinscale you can explore the surrounding fells and woodlands. For novice ramblers why not try Catbells and be rewarded with stunning views of Derwentwater & Keswick, or if you are feeling more adventurous take a hike up Causey Pike and maybe even complete the Coledale Horse Shoe!

Alternatively you can take a leisurely 15 minute stroll from the village into Keswick. Take the suspension bridge over the river Greta and then cut through the ‘The Howrahs’ and then treat yourself to some lunch and enjoy the spectacular riverside views from The Bridge Cafe or Kat’s Kitchen.

Other points of interest include Lingholm Gardens, where you can enjoy a delicious afternoon tea and look down on the walled garden that Beatrix Potter credited as her original inspiration for Mr McGregor’s garden in The Tale of Peter Rabbit or have a meet and greet with a herd of woolly llamas!

Feeling like a bite to eat then you are in for a treat. The Chalet is a little gem of a place offering delicious homemade pizza, sandwiches and cakes. If it’s a pint of local ale you’re after then look no further than the Farmers Arms with it’s traditional Lakeland charm and terraced beer garden.

With regular bus services Portinscale is easily accessible to the surrounding area via the X5/X4 route or if you feel like venturing further why not jump on the 77/77a Honistor rambler and take in the stunning views as you descend into Buttermere.
